Legends (The beginning)

It all began a long time ago in a place that is not so far away. In fact, it was very close. It began with a complex located in Ottawa, a small city that was the location of the federal government of Canada. No one could have thought that this complex was a threatening beast, but I suppose when one wants to hide its desire for armageddon it hides it in a place that no one would dare to look. This, and the fact that Canada never was much of a warring nation, with little desire to do so, helped the cause.

The company that owned the complex was BioTech Laboratories, Inc. This company studied various diseases and viruses such as AIDS and Hepititus B under contract with the government. What was not readily known was that they also had a contract with DND, Department of National Defence. They also made biological warfare germs, something that is outlawed internationally, and something that Canada would never be suspected of. The complex itself is made up of eighteen buildings spread out over a vast land and underneath as well. The administration was located in the above-ground buildings while the labs themselves were located in the below sections. Originally, the surrounding land was meant to be uninhabited but local development and snooping do-gooders said that the land should be used. They also hinted at the fact that the company shouldn't have anything to hide, you see or they, the do-gooders, would do something about it. Idiots.

I was a security guard at this location. There were three of us that looked after it. Now, although there really was a need for more, we were quite content with our small trio, the Three Amigos, as Steve said. Steven Zytveld and Joseph Lam were my partners in crime, so to speak. Because the "rent-a-cop" company had trouble finding replacemetns for us, largely due to the location itself and the rumors about it, we had decided to setup so the security post so we didn't have to leave. There was a small washer and dryer set, and a little kitchenette that we were allowed to use. Add it that it was summer and university was done, we had time to relax and enjoy. Well, enjoy as much as we could since there was little in the way of conveniences in the area. No stores, grocery centers, nothing but the Complex and "do-gooders".

The two cots were located in the back part of the office, hidden from the view of main desk. This main desk area was, in fact, the front enterance to the complex itself. The buildings of the complex were attached to each other by a series of tunnels, through which you could obtain access by palm scan, iris scan and ID badge bar code. They were somewhat serious about security, and certain levels had all three methods plus a forth — voice recognition. Only certain people were allowed into the high-security defense section.
I was just finishing the overnight shift and Steve was getting ready to relieve me by doing the day shift. Joseph had gone out in the truck to check the perimeter and to get some breakfast from a local restaurant whose coffee I'm sure that Imperial Oil is passing off as their premium blend gasoline. Well, as local as a 30 minute drive can be. As Steven was setting up, he was telling me about his newest idea for a novel. Steven has always dreamed of being as good as his idol, Stephen King. He was talking about rats when James Hirst sauntered into the office.
